NSW Learners License (L - Yellow L's)

You must obtain a NSW Learner License before you can learn to drive.

  • To obtain a Learner License you need to pass a Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and an eyesight test.
  • The DKT is a computer based road rules knowledge test. You have to answer 45 questions into 3 sections. Section 1 has 15 questions - allowed 3 wrong. Sections 2 and 3 = 30 questions - allowed 1 wrong.
  • Before doing the DKT, pick up a Road Users Handbook and an application form from any RTA office or download from RTA website.. see our links page.
  • Make sure you study the Road Users handbook and have a go on the practice test to make sure you are ready.
  • It is advisable (though not necessary), to book in for the DKT at your local RTA office, to save you having to wait.
  • You can attempt the DKT at any RTA office; and if you fail you can retry the test the next day.
  • When you go the RTA office to do the test, make sure you take the completed application form, the required identification (listed on the application form), and $22.00 to cover the cost of the leaners license when you pass the DKT. (The DKT will cost $39.00 for each attempt).
  • The RTA Hand Book with cost $11.00.

Practice your RTA Knowledge Test.
