Learners – Learner Licence ( Yellow Ls)
You must obtain a NSW Learner License before you can learn to drive.
- To obtain a Learner License you need to pass a Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and an eyesight test.
- The DKT is a computer based road rules knowledge test. You have to answer 45 questions in 3 sections. Section 1 has 15 questions – allowed 3 wrong. Sections 2 and 3 have 30 question – allowed 1 wrong.
- Before doing the DKT, pick up a Road Users Handbook and an application form from any RMS office or download from RMS website.. http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/licensing/downloads/gettitestsdrivieduca_dl1.html our links page.
- Make sure you study the Road Users handbook and have a go on the practice test to make sure you are ready.
- It is advisable (though not necessary), to book in for the DKT at your local RMS office, to save you having to wait.
- You can attempt the DKT at any RMS office; and if you fail you can retry the test the next day.
- When you go the RMS office to do the test, make sure you take the completed application form, the required identification (listed on the application form), and $22.00 to cover the cost of the leaners license when you pass the DKT. (The DKT will cost $41.00 for each attempt).
- The RMS Hand Book with cost $12.00.

Provisional License (P1 – Red P’s)

- Restricted towing
- 4 demerit points for 18 months (any speeding fines will incur 3 mths suspension)
- Auto restriction (where applicable)
- Must not supervise a learner
- No upgrade to a higher license

Provisional License (P2 – Green P’s)
Pass a hazard perception test (HPT) ($41.00 for each attempt) on the computer.
Provisional Licence (P2):

- Maximum speed allowable: 100 km/h
- P plates to be displayed (green P) outside the vehicle
- No towing restrictions
- 7 demerit points for 2 years 6 months
- No towing restrictions
- Must not supervise a learner
- Upgrade to a higher license is allowed
Progression to a ‘full’ licence: Pass a Driver Qualification Test (DQT) which is a combination of an advanced hazard perception test, a further test of road rules and knowledge of safe driving practices.
